Judges 6 [Read]
Judges 7 [Read]
Luke 8:1-21 [Read]
The first part of Judges (ch.1-16) contains seven cycles, and each begins with “the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD”. Within each cycle, the history basically repeated itself with different main character and enemy. The Israelites went astray from the LORD, and God gave them over to their enemies. The enemies oppressed the Israelites, so they cried to the LORD their God. The LORD delivered them from their enemy by raising Judges. The Judges defeated the enemies, saved the Israelites, and the whole nation was peaceful for a period of time. After the Judge died, the Israelites went astray and the cycle started again.
This is also a book which we see very few words from the LORD, especially when you compare with the previous 6 books. Throughout the process of bringing people out of Egypt with his mighty hand, establishing all the Laws and rules, and leading them into the Promised Land, the LORD was very outspoken. He directed every move of his people. Even when his people rebelled against his commandments, he still spoke to them through his servants. The words of the LORD continued to guide his people.
But that’s not so in the book of Judges. It’s almost like the LORD decided to let the rebellious children alone. Even though he always came to the rescue when they cried out to him, he did not speak much. In fact, today’s reading probably recorded the most word spoken by the LORD in the book. Not surprisingly, the period of Judges was also the darkest period in the history of Israel. “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint” (Prov. 29:18).
Is there a word from the Lord in your life today? I am not referring to audible words people claimed they heard from the Lord. In fact, I have never had such experiences. But do you “hear” the word when you read the Bible every day? Does the Bible speak to you in a way like the honey dripping from the honeycomb? If you have not had a word from the Lord for a while, then it’s probably time to re-examine your life for any unrevealed sins. Bring them to the Lord in repentance, and start to enjoy “hearing” the words again.
