Luke 1:57-80 [Read]
The opening of the book of Joshua is about final preparation. After 40 years in the wilderness, with their previous leaders and generation passed away, the people of Israel was about to enter the Promised Land. Before they could “inherit the land” (Jos 1:6), God must make some final preparations.
First, God must prepare the leader. “Be strong and courageous!” (1:9) It was a historical moment for the nation of Israel, and over 600,000 men were waiting anxiously to claim their homeland. The air must be filled with anticipation and excitement, and much of the pressure fell on the newly ordained leader Joshua. Although he had been the right-hand man of Moses for 40 years, it was understandable that he still needed serious encouragement from the Lord. “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (1:5). Only when the leader was ready, the battle might begin.
Second, God must prepare the enemy. “People are melting in fear because of you.” (2:9, 24) The battle field began at the heart, and the ones who lost their heart shall lose the battle. Rahab was the agent in this case, and her faith pleased the Lord and opened the door of victory for God’s army (Heb 11:31). Jericho was disarmed by the name of the Lord, and the battle was half won.
Finally, God must prepare the people. “All Israel passed by…on dry ground” (3:17). This was a re-enactment of what happened to their fathers: “the Israelites went through… on dry ground” (Ex 14:22, Jos 4:23). I could not imagine how the younger generation must have felt when they walked on the dry riverbed of Jordan. “Wow! I heard my dad talked about it but I never thought I would experience this myself”. With such miraculous act, God sealed the faith of this generation. They were indeed ready for battle now.
Luke 1 showed a different kind of preparation. The goal was to claim a different Promised Land, one that was in the heart of the chosen ones. “He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, his kingdom will never end” (Lk 1:33). God’s preparation is indeed meticulous, and each one of us was led through the Red Sea in dry ground by him (1 Co 10:2). Today is the day for us to recall the preparations God has done in our life, so we may gain strength and joy to continue running the heaven-bound path.
