When is the end? What will be the signs? These questions not only aroused the curiosity of Jesus’ disciples (Mk 13:4), but they also puzzled many believers and theologians throughout the church history. After all, we have been given such a breathtaking picture of the new heaven and new earth (Rev 21). For any true believer of Christ, it will be hard not to feel excited about the end. Jesus did not give a clear answer, for only the Father knows the time (13:32). However, he did give instructions about how we shall face such unknown.
“Watch out that no one deceives you” (13:5). The end will be preceded with deceptions of people who claim to be Jesus (13:6), who can even perform miracles (13:22). In fact, the age of deception has already arrived, just look at how easily people get deceived by the information from the internet. True followers of Christ must watch out and learn to discern all things by the Spirit (1Cor 2:15), and must not unknowingly become part of the deceptive scheme by spreading such news.
“You must be on your guard…for all men will hate you because of me” (13:9,13). The end will be accompanied by suffering because of our faith, and we will be persecuted (13:10). Our belief in the Biblical teachings such as marriage and moral standard will become the excuses of other people’s attack, but through these we will become the instrument of spreading the Gospel message (13:10-11). Therefore, stand firm to the end and we shall be saved (13:13). Perseverance is a must for all true Christians.
“Be on guard! Be alert!” (13:33). Being faithful in God’s calling and his work is the God-pleasing way to wait for the end. Each servant of Christ is given tasks to do (13:34), and each is expected to do them with the mindset that the master could come back any time. He who is faithful and wise shall be rewarded richly (Mt 24:45), and he who is lazy and wicked shall receive the deserved punishment (Mt 24:51). The timing may be unknown, but the judgment has been foretold.
Therefore, be on guard, be alert, and be steadfast. The end could be here any time.
