Numbers 1 [Read]
Numbers 2 [Read]
Mark 3:1-21 [Read]
Today, we start on the 4th book of the Pentateuch. In Leviticus, the time seemed to be frozen in all the rules and laws. But in Numbers, the time flew by quickly as several significant events took place in the wilderness. The book began in the second month of the second year after Israelites left Egypt (1:1), and 39 years would fly by before we get to the end of this book (33:38). During these 39 years, many things happened and many people, over 600 thousands, passed away (26:64). In this book God conducted the “great orientation” on his people, so that they might be ready to enter the land God gave them – the Promised Land.
What do we make out of all the names and numbers and arrangement in the first two chapters of Numbers? I believe the key is in the last verse of each chapter, that is they did everything according to the Lord commanded (1:54, 2:34). Why did God want the tribes to arrange their camp in such way? I don’t think anyone knows it for sure. But I found it amusing when I envisioned this happening in today’s church if we start to assign seat for everyone in Sunday service. “Pastor, I don’t really feel comfortable sitting next to so and so”. “Our group feels more comfortable sitting together”. “I feel more comfortable sitting in the back”…
After becoming a Christian, I found it difficult to re-orient myself to the new way of living. I longed for the peace and joy Christians told me about, but I dreaded to lose some of my old ways of living. So, I tried to find a comfortable compromise. After all, nobody but God could tell me what to do with my life. Furthermore, other people’s experiences may not fit me well. After some major stumbling, I found that there was no such word as “comfortable” in the Bible or in the Christian living. Either I re-oriented myself to Him, or I simply stayed as a nominal believer. Either I let go of myself, or I let go of God. There is no middle way. There is no comfortable compromise.
This is the objective of Numbers: orient yourself to God. It will not be easy, it will not be quick, and certainly it will not be comfortable. But the reward is the heavenly peace you have been longing for. So, it’s time to make up your mind.
