Exodus 29 [Read]
Exodus 30 [Read]
Matthew 22:1-22 [Read]
The word “holy” occurs 52 times in the Chinese translation of Ex 28-30, and all have something to do with the priests or things touched by them. This is considered very high frequency in the entire Bible. It gives us a good idea how important this was to God, and He wanted to make sure Moses conveyed these instructions to His people.
When we read these chapters, we may wonder what Aaron and his sons thought about all the rituals they had to follow. If reading them already made your head spin, just imagine doing it on a regular basis. They had to clean themselves thoroughly (29:4), but then they would get animal blood sprinkled all over them (29:20-21). For Aaron, he also had to wear this heavy Ephod and breast piece for 7 days whenever He came to the tabernacle (29:30). Above all, they would be constantly at the risk of being struck down by God for something they missed (28:35, 43). Would anyone even want to take on such role today?
But we are all priests now (1 Pt 2:9), and we are all called to be holy for the One called us is holy (1 Pt 1:16). Though we are not required to perform all those rituals described in today’s reading (thanks to Jesus!), we are being measured with an higher standard (Eph 4:1, Phi 1:27). When Jesus told the parable of the wedding banquet (Mt 22:1-14), he meant it to be a stern warning for all of us. Christians who do not follow the teaching of the Bible is like the guest who did not wear the wedding clothes, and that ought to wake us up quickly.
“If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mt 16:24). To be holy is to deny oneself, for the self is corrupted by Sin. To be holy is to take up the cross, for the heavy burden will bend (humble) us. To be holy is to follow him, for only His grace is sufficient for us to walk this heaven bound path. Have mercy on us, Lord, so we may follow you closely.
