每日诗歌: Ancient words (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouTgX9hcwk4)
Jeremiah 5 [Read]
Jeremiah 6 [Read]
1 Timothy 1 [Read]
After being called by God at a young age (Jer 1:6), Jeremiah began his career as a prophet whom everyone hated (1:18). His first assignment was to speak about how the people of God forsook their Lord after all he had done for them, and he was also to declare the judgment that was about to take place due to their unfaithfulness.
“I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable” (2:7). All the miracles that God performed in leading his people into the Promised Land were forgotten by Israel, and they quickly turned to worship other gods (2:8). They forsook the spring of living water, and they dug for themselves broken cisterns that could not hold water (2:13). Judah was even worse than Israel, for they were deceitful against the omniscient LORD (3:11). These things sound so terrible when we read them as ancient history, but the fact is that such history is still repeating itself even to this day. Many still abandon the living water after tasting its sweetness, and many still turn to worldly cisterns that cannot ever be filled. The depravity and foolishness of man continue.
Nevertheless, God continues to call his people to return to him like a father calling his prodigal children home. “Return, faithless people…for I am your husband” (3:14). “Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding” (3:22). Even though Israel defiled the land with prostitution and wickedness (3:2), they could still return to the LORD (3:1) because “I am merciful… and I will not be angry forever” (3:12). Such is the God we put our faith in. Regardless what kind of sin and transgression we commit, we can always return to him with confidence that he will forgive us.
Therefore, as we stand at the crossroads and look, we must ask for the ancient paths (6:16). These ancient paths have been travelled by many generations of faithful followers of God, and they have left behind blazes and marks along the way to encourage and guide us. The path may be narrow and winding, and you will surely get bruises and scratches on your arms and legs. However, such ancient path is the good way and we must walk in it (6:16), for he who walks in this path will find true rest for his soul.
