Ever since I was young, my father always taught me “a good tool is essential for a successful project”. Therefore, my father used to have a lot of tools at home. Due to that influence, I also became a believer of that proverb and accumulated various tools for yard work, woodwork, and other projects. I can’t say I really use all of them, though. After God called us into full-time ministry, I reluctantly allowed my wife to get rid of many tools so that it’s easier for us to move around. Now, I accumulate books as my new tools. I guess men never change.
“I am the LORD, and there is no other” (Isa 45:5). What “other” was God referring to? The context tells us that those were the idols Israel grew to worship, and God was infuriated by such rebellious behavior. Isaiah told an interesting parable about idols as false god. A man cut a tree from the woods (44:14), and he used half of it to burn a fire to keep him warm and to cook meal (44:16). After his physical needs were satisfied, he used the rest of the wood to make an idol and worship it, saying “save me; you are my god” (44:17). But throughout the whole process, this man never thought about who created that tree for him. The idol he made, which he called it god, became his tool to satisfy his fleshy needs. For such people, God declared that “all the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced; they will go into disgrace together” (45:16).
The truth is that all things are created by God (45:12). Because of that, all of us are his tools, or instruments as spoken about by Paul, created for the purpose of being useful to the Master for doing good work (2Ti 2:21). For those who come to God solely for the purpose of satisfying their own fleshy needs, they try to use God as tools. Such mentality ultimately and inevitably leads to shame. Whereas for those who pursue God for who God is, they sincerely want to know and follow his will. These people are the disciples of Christ, and they will be cleansed and become useful instruments for God. They shall gain unimaginable fulfillment by doing God’s work, seeing changed life, and eventually be rewarded with eternal life. Are you willing to be such instrument of God?
