Proverbs 30 [Read]
Proverbs 31 [Read]
2 Corinthians 8 [Read]
Wisdom is to know your boundaries. When children are young, parents set up barrier at the kitchen entrance and the stairs. It’s not that they want to confine their children, but they want to protect their precious little ones from being hurt by knives and stoves or stumbling down the stairs. Some children gladly acknowledge the boundaries and play happily in their area, but some cry and kick and even break the boundaries. As a result, they hurt themselves and learn the lessons the hard way.
The wise asks God to keep him within the boundaries. First, make him know the boundary of knowledge. “Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar” (Prob 30:6). God’s word is flawless (30:5), and the wise must not be arrogant enough to think he can add anything to it. Keep falsehood and lies far from him (30:8), so that he would not make things up for his own glory. Many things we human beings do not understand (30:18-19), and many things of Creation can teach us lesson of life (30:24-28). Knowing our boundary in knowledge is the essential way to show our fear to the LORD, and such fear is the beginning of knowledge (1:7).
Second, make him know the boundary of needs. “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread” (30:8). The wise knows that he is prone to greed, and any real or perceived needs would make him do awful things (30:11-16). Therefore, he asks God to provide him with just enough so he can have a pure heart to pursue God. When Jesus teaches us to pray “give us this day of our daily bread”, he may not be just thinking about food. Perhaps he is asking God to keep us within our boundary of needs, nothing more and nothing less.
Finally, the wise gives a finest example of how to stay within one’s boundaries and be a blessing of many. The wife of noble characters is wise, and she is neither overpowering nor burdening to her family. She works day and night to bring prosperity to her husband (31:12), her family (31:15), and her people (31:20). She knows her ability and duty, and she works diligently within her boundaries. That brings her praise and glory (31:30-31). May we all know our boundaries and be wise in our pursuit of the One who gives life. Amen.
