Corinthians 14:21-40 [Read]
Many years ago, I was on a business trip in NC. One day after the meeting, I got some free time and decided to drive to the famous chapel of Duke University nearby. It was late afternoon when I arrived, and I was the only soul in the huge sanctuary. I sat in the pew and soaked myself in the precious serenity of the beautifully designed building. At that moment, I seem to truly appreciate the promise of “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14).
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace” (1Cor 14:33). Towards the end of the teachings about spiritual gifts, Paul reminds the Corinthians about the essence of the God they worship. He is a God of order and peace, and it is unthinkable to worship him with people talking in various tongues whenever they like (14:27), prophesying whenever they feel being filled with the spirit (14:29), and asking questions whenever they want (14:35). How can they worship the Prince of Peace in a totally chaotic manner?
“The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets” (14:32). We don’t know the exact meaning of “spirits of prophets”, but it is generally agreed that it is probably the manifestation of the prophesying gift given to the prophet. Such gift should be subject to the control of the prophet. Paul is saying that one cannot simply burst out words in a trance during the worship and attributes that to the action of the Holy Spirit, and the same thing can be said for the tongues (14:28). A person truly has the indwelling Holy Spirit can control the gifts of the Spirit, for they are from the same God of order.
As we conclude on the hotly debated section on spiritual gifts, we need to pause and meditate on the basic principles Paul tries to convey, for they often get lost amidst passionate arguments. The ultimate purpose of all gifts is to edify God’s church, the most excellent way to apply all gifts is by love, and the glorious one we worship with all gifts is a God of order and peace. As long as we abide by these biblical principles, I am positive that God will be pleased with the outcome.
