“Exodus” is a compound word. “Ex” means “out of”, and “odus” means “way”. Therefore, exodus actually means “out of a way”. What way? The way Egypt was, the way they worshiped their idols, and the way they lived. The title basically says “Get out of the way the world lives!” Therefore, this is the book God showed the Israelites and us His Way – the Ten Commandments.
The first two chapters laid the background for us, and Moses used some subtle ways to convey important messages. “A new king who did not know Joseph came to power” (1:8). I think Joseph is probably not the focus here. Instead, it’s the One behind Joseph who became not known by the new king. The name of the king was not given, for his name was not even worth being mentioned in this book of life. He did not know God, and he did not fear God.
In contrast, this was followed by the story about two midwives. These two regular persons were as plain as you and me, and they were just making a living by helping women give birth. Surprisingly, their names, Shiphrah and Puah, were mentioned. Can we imagine the weight and honor of being mentioned by name (in a positive way of course) in the Book of Life? These two little people actually made the honor list. Furthermore, they were greatly blessed with their own children by God. It was not for just WHAT they did, but mainly for WHY they did it. “The midwives feared God” (1:21). What a difference!
There is a message here. The power and success of this world means nothing in God’s eye, only the ones who fear Him will be honored and blessed by our Lord. Too many times, we say and do things without fearing the Lord our God. He is watching, and He does remember all things. Now, I am so glad that we have the promise in 1 John 1:9.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov 9:10). With that same fear of the Lord, let us begin our journey into the revelation of His Way – the Ten Commandments.
