Romans 3 [Read]
The center of Romans 3 is the righteousness of God. The Jews thought that they could become righteous through following “the very words of God” (3:2), for the Laws they received embodied “the knowledge and truth” about God (2:20). It’s a visible and measureable standard laid out by God’s servant Moses, and following something like that was much easier than trying to figure out something as unfathomable as the will of God (2:18).
But that was not the purpose of the Laws. “There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God” (3:11). “All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one” (3:12). “There is no fear of God before their eyes” (3:18). “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men” (Isa 29:13). As a result, the giving of the Laws actually exposed the darkness of the human’s heart. Therefore, it is so true that “through the law we become conscious of sin” (Rom 3:20).
Here comes the core of the Christian belief. Since no human can reach the standard of God’s righteousness, we need a way out. But how can sinful mankind find a way out for ourselves? We can’t even overcome the indwelling sin in our heart! Therefore, we need something “apart from law” (3:21), and that’s exactly what God provided. “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice” (3:25). This provision is not just for the Jews, but for all mankind (3:22). And it does not cost us anything, for we are “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (3:24). Therefore, “we are saved by grace through faith” (Eph 2:8). “Where, then, is boasting? “(Rom 3:27).
For Christians, you may say “I knew all these”. The truth is we need to know it by heart and live a life accordingly that is worthy of the calling (and grace) we received (Eph 4:1). The minute we think we can put that to the back of our mind, we would be in danger of acting out our sinful nature. So, memorize as much as you can about Romans 3. It is good for your soul.
