每日诗歌: Thy Word (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18eLs9A1Nqo)
Job 19 [Read]
Job 20 [Read]
Acts 9:23-43 [Read]
Behind a skyscraper, there is a builder. Behind a great leader, there is an edifier. Behind David, we find Samuel who anointed and guided him to become the great king of Israel. Behind King Joash, we find Jehoiada who protected, taught, and supported him to become a good king of Judah. In the same way, behind Apostle Paul we find Barnabas, the Son of Encouragement (Acts 4:36).
After his conversion, Paul (still called Saul at the time) was filled with the Spirit and zeal to prove that Jesus is the Christ (Acts 9:22). As foretold by the Lord, he began to experience much suffering through the persecution of the Jews (9:24). As he escaped from them and came to Jerusalem, the disciples were all afraid of him and refused to believe his conversion (9:26). However, Barnabas took him and brought him to the Apostles (9:27). Barnabas was one of the early Jewish converts of the Jerusalem Church (4:36), and he was probably well respected when Paul came to Jerusalem. Without worrying about his own reputation, he boldly received Paul when nobody else did. Through him, Paul was affirmed by the disciples (9:28) and continued to preached the Gospel (9:29). God rewarded their effort by adding people to the young Church (9:31).
After Paul was sent back to his hometown Tarsus (9:30), Barnabas did not forget about him. As he was sent by the Jerusalem church to Antioch (11:22), Barnabas went to find Paul and brought him to Antioch (11:25). They spent one year in Antioch devoting themselves in teaching the disciples (11:26). This resulted in clear change in their way of living, so much so that other people gave them a new name – Christians (11:26). Later on, Barnabas became the loyal coworker of Paul in his 1stmissionary trip to Asia Minor. It is fair to say that the edifying heart of Barnabas was the conduit used by God to build up His faithful servant Paul to accomplish his own will.
How many of us want to be leaders these days and how many prefer to be edifier of others? How many of us are aspired to be Paul and how many are willing to do the work of Barnabas? God’s Kingdom needs to have both. But from my experiences, the heart of Barnabas is becoming a vanishing breed. O Lord, have mercy and raise more Barnabas for your Kingdom’s sake.
