John 16:16-33 [Read]
What is the work of the Holy Spirit? It’s a big topic which people have written books about. In terms of direct teachings from Jesus on this topic, it’s surprisingly scarce and they are mostly recorded in John 14-16. Counselor was the name Jesus gave him, and it clearly indicated his main task for the disciples. He is to be with us forever (14:16), to teach us all things and remind us everything about Jesus (14:26), to testify about Jesus (15:26), to convict the world of guilt (16:8), and to glorify Jesus (16:14). The original Greek name for the Holy Spirit can be directly translated to “reminder by our side”. He is someone who abides by us, and he reminds us everything the Lord teaches in his Word. That to me is the main task of the Holy Spirit.
Today’s OT reading provides us with an excellent example of such task. Joash became king of Judah when he was seven. Even at that young age, he had already experienced the horrible consequences of human sin. His own grandmother killed all his uncles and brothers, and he would have been killed if not for the bravery of Jehoiada the priest. With Jehoiada by his side, Joash became a good king in his youth (2Ch 24:2). He repaired the temple of the LORD, and he rekindled the God-fearing spirit of the people (24:14). We can imagine that Jehoiada must have taught him everything about the LORD, and he reminded the young king constantly about doing what was right in God’s eyes. He was indeed the best Counselor for Joash.
Jehoiada died of old age (24:15), and the young king began to listen to others (14:17). The results were terrible (24:18). At the end, he was killed by his own officials in his bed (24:25). The life of Joash vividly depicts the importance of a Counselor by one’s side.
Jehoiada was mortal after all, and he could not be with the young king forever. However, the promise we received is that our Counselor will be by our side forever, and he will be the most faithful reminder anyone can ever have. One thing Joash did right was that he listened to his loyal counselor, and that is the thing we are asked to do. Let us recognize the main task of the Holy Spirit and let him guide our lives, for this is the will of God.
