John 14 [Read]
Very little was said about king Asa in the book of 1 Kings, but his life story was greatly expanded in 2 Chronicles. Asa was a good king for “he did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God” (2Ch 14:2). Because of that, the kingdom of Judah was mostly in peace during his 41-year reign. It was a good period for the people of God.
The Chronicler did have a point in his expansion of Asa’s story, and he obviously saw this point to be extremely important for the people returned from the Babylonian exile. Throughout the three chapters that described the life of king Asa (2Ch 14-16), the word “seeking” repeatedly appeared especially in 2Ch 15. “The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you” (2Ch 15:2). “They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul” (2Ch 15:12). But how did they seek the LORD? The text provided us with some hints.
First, they need to go back to the priests who taught the Law (15:3). The seeking of God always begins with his word, for his will was revealed through his word. Second, they removed the detestable idols from the land (15:8). Our God is a jealous God, and he demands undivided loyalty from his people. Third, they repaired the altar and offered sacrifices to the LORD (15:11). God is pleased with his people bringing offering to him, for a sacrifice of thanksgiving is what he wants. Finally, they took an oath wholeheartedly (15:15). An oath is a commitment, and a wholehearted commitment is the only proper response to a God who has given so much to his people.
Human being was created with eternity in their heart (Ecc 3:11), and “God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27). Seeking the Lord is the permeating theme of the entire Bible, and only through such action we may fill the void in our heart. The great promise from God is that “seek and you will find” (Matt 7:7). So, don’t give up! Regardless how difficult the situation is for you right now, seek him with all your heart and you shall find.
