John 8:21-36 [Read]
Spring is here. Every morning my wife and I are awakened by the singing of a bird outside of our window. He has a loud voice, and he does not mind showing off his gift from God when the first light comes through the East. Everyone else is still at sleep, but he could not wait to announce the arrival of another day. If only I could understand bird’s language, then maybe I can sing with him. I am sure he is praising God for giving him another day, so he can again fly freely in the sky to enjoy God’s creation and provision. I wish I have that kind of spirit every morning too.
I have no doubt that God loves music, and he enjoys his people singing songs to him. After God defeated the Egyptian army by the Red Sea, Moses broke into a song of praise (Ex 15:1) and his sister Miriam joined in (15:21). When God defeated Canaanites, Deborah and Barak sang song to praise him (Jdg 5:1). When David went to welcome the Ark, there was trumpet and shouting with joy (2Sam 6:15). David knew God well, so he appointed specific people to perform that duty after the Ark came to Jerusalem (1Ch 6:31). They ministered with their voices, and they performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them (6:32). Their names got to be recorded in the Holy Bible along with their genealogy, showing their special identity as gifted people to serve the almighty God. Praising was definitely no small matter in God’s eye.
But singing and praising was not just for God, it’s also for us. It was the serene music of hymns that first brought me in contact with Christian faith, and it has never left me since. Many times a familiar hymn accompanied me when joy filled my heart, and many times a hymn comforted my spirit when I was down. I may not have the discipline and cheerfulness to sing out loud every morning like the bird outside of my window, but I know I can always rely on some good old hymns to lift my spirit closer to my Lord. You can do that too. Sing a song to the Lord today. It doesn’t matter whether you have perfect pitch or not, just let the music do the magic for you.
