每日诗歌: Shine Jesus Shine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr5Y63bDNNg)

John 8:1-20 [Read]
It was past 7 o’clock. I dragged my exhausted body into the car after a long day, and I had another 45-minute drive before getting home for dinner. The good thing was the traffic should be light by now. After getting onto the highway, I stepped on the gas and the car was moving fast under the twilight. Suddenly, a bright light lit up from behind me. It was so bright that its reflection from the mirror almost blinded my sight. Just when I was wondering what was going on, I heard the siren went off. I stopped my car on the shoulder, and a patrol officer got off his car… (I only got a warning though). That episode happened more than 15 years ago, but I can never forget the moment when the bright light suddenly shone on me.
Light reveals (Jn 1:7). It reveals the glory of the source for us to admire. In the mean time, it also reveals the object being shone on. When the light of God shines on a repentant heart, it reveals the corrupted self and draws the soul to the source of the light. It’s an experience many of us share and must not forget. Light indeed reveals.
Light separates (Gen 1:4). When there is light, there is darkness as well. The contrast is inevitable. “Light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it” (Jn 1:5). The boundary was not formed by the light but by the rejection of light by darkness. The earthly ministry of our Lord demonstrated that vividly, and such contrast continues to this day. “You are of the world; I am not of the world” (Jn 8:23). We are told to go into the world and shine before the world (Mt 5:16), but we are never to be of the world. Light indeed separates.
Light leads. “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (Jn 8:12). It’s hard to navigate through life, and many of us stumbled in darkness before. The light of life is a lamp to my feet (Ps 119:105), and it keeps us from falling into unnecessary potholes. Often time the light does not shine far, but it’s sufficient for us to walk his path day by day. Light indeed leads.
Today is a good time to reflect on the Lord’s words: “I am the light of the world”. How much we appreciate this will determine how close we follow him.
