Luke 23:1-26 [Read]
We don’t display many pictures in our home. For the ones we do display, most of them are for my two sons. I don’t think there is anything special about this, for many homes I went to do the same thing. The parent-children relationship is something extremely special and precious. I would even call it something divine.
Solomon asked for a discerning heart to govern God’s people, and God was pleased and granted his wish (3:12). Right after that, Bible provided a case of him exercising this newly obtained discerning ability (3:16-27). Without a high-tech DNA testing lab, it was almost impossible to judge between the two women’s claims. But Solomon easily solved the mystery.
What exactly did Solomon discern in this case? I have never thought of it this way. He indeed found a clever way to distinguish the two women, but what exactly did he discern? I don’t think his judgment was based on the knowledge of human sinfulness, and I certainly don’t believe the story was to show his shrewdness. It is something deeper than those. I believe he understood something precious, something unique, and, most importantly in my view, something divine in every human being. It is the instinct of a parent’s sacrificial love for his or her child. That discernment solved the case.
“The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Prov 9:10). The word “understanding” is the same word as “discerning” in today’s reading. A person with a discerning heart has the knowledge of God, and he knows that God has instilled something divine, his image and likeness (Gen 1:26), into the crown jewel of his Creation. And one of such divine qualities is the sacrificial love. To discern is to recognize that beautiful quality, both in others and in oneself, and be willing to let it flow into all relationship including offsprings, friends, and the needed and poor. The end result will be a godly aroma in the corrupted world. In the NT term, this is called “to participate in the divine nature” (2Pt 1:4).
The key to unlock this divine nature is the cross, which is the best demonstration of such sacrificial love. Only with our heart connected to the source of such love, we may participate in such divine nature and become a conduit of God’s blessing to others. And the heavenly reward will be greater than all the earthly treasure Solomon owned.
