Genesis 27 [Read]
Genesis 28 [Read]
Matthew 9:18-38 [Read]
Genesis 27 is hard to read. The degree of corruption in the human heart horrifies me, and the way this dysfunctional family deceived each other is simply unbelievable. This is supposed to be a family of God's covenant, and they had experienced God's blessing first hand. God appeared to Isaac more than once, and He gave Isaac the two sons as an answer to his prayer. We just read yesterday that God gave him the well of "broadness" after he was bullied repeatedly by the Philistines. But none of these things seem to make a difference when the family members began to fight for the blessing of God. The father chose to give out the blessing against God' will (Gen 25:23), the mother chose to deceive her husband thru manipulative scheme, the elder son wanted the blessing even though he already gave away the birth right (Gen 25:34), and the younger son acted out the devious scheme designed by the mother in order to gain blessing. Can you imagine living in such a family? It's pretty sad.
What was the result of their sinful acts? The father had to send away his son, the mother never got to see her beloved son again, the elder son wanted to kill his own brother, and the younger son left home for 20 years before coming back. The corruption caused everyone to suffer, and it caused the family to break apart forever. Everyone wanted to control the blessing, but it fled all. However, one thing that was not deterred throughout all these devious schemes was the plan of God. The nation of Israel was still established through Jacob's journey to his uncle Laban, and the family line of our Savior continued.
How's your family? Do you go home to a place of love and comfort everyday, or do you go home to a place that each person only thinks about getting what he or she wants? I believe family is the shelter God designed for us, home is the place we can have quietness and trust (Isa 30:15). If that's not the case for you now, then you should take heed from today's reading and come to the Lord with repentance and prayer. He can change heart, and He is willing. "When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd" (Matt 9:36).
May the Lord of all comfort give you peace.
Keep on reading.
