Genesis 25 [Read]
Genesis 26 [Read]
Matthew 9:1-17 [Read]
We are into the double digit now. Keep going! And very soon we will be into the triple digit of days.
If altar is the thing Abraham built to show his faith, then the well is the thing Isaac adhered to show his loyalty. When I read Gen 25:11, the name hit me as something very familiar. As I went back to check (Gen 16:14), it dawned on me the significance of what is being said here. Isaac was never portrayed as a strong figure in the Bible, but he is always included in expressing the relationship between God and Israel -- "I am the God of your fathers, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob". Isaac may not be a strong-minded person, but he knows one thing, that is to stay with God, stay with the "living God who sees" which is the meaning of " Beer-lahai-roi". When the servant of Abraham brought Rebekah back to Isaac, he was just back from Beer-lahai-roi. When his father Abraham passed away, Isaac stayed in Beer-lahai-roi. He stayed with "the living God who sees".
Then the famine came, and he was thinking about going to Egypt. But God told him to stay in Canaan (Gen 26:2), to stay in the land God gave his father, to stay with God. This is where Isaac showed his true faith: he listened and he stayed. God blessed him with great blessings, so much so that the Philistines were jealous. They kicked him out, and they filled his wells. But Isaac continued to dig out those wells, and one by one they were taken away by the Philistines. But Isaac never gave up, for the well had a special significance to him. It signified the blessing of God. He knew that God would not abandon him, so he kept digging. Finally, he got one that was "broad" (Rehoboth), and he knew that " Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land" (Gen 26:22). Right after that, God appeared to him and reassured him about the covenant.
Sometimes, we may not have the courage or will to build an altar in front of people. We may not have enough faith to publicly stand against what the world is saying. But at least we should have the determination to dig wells, to adhere to Beer-lahai-roi, to stay with God. Many times in my life, God made a difficult situation "broad" for me, God gave me a Rehoboth, simply because I stick with him. If he has done that with Isaac, if he has done that with me and many other witnesses "like cloud around us", then you can be sure that he will do that with you. Stay with your faith, stay with Beer-lahai-roi, stay with God.
Keep on reading.
